On August 11, 2022, Barrington and Countryside firefighters were quickly dispatched to two separate house fires reported in the afternoon. Both incidents occurred almost simultaneously, with units responding to a residence on Penny Drive, which turned out to be unfounded, and another at 4 McGlashen Drive in South Barrington. Upon arrival, police officers reported heavy fire in the garage after neighbors heard an explosion.
The incident was initially classified as a Code 3, but it was soon upgraded to a Code 4 Working Fire. As the situation escalated, a MABAS Box Alarm was called for, and crews transitioned to a defensive strategy. A second alarm was issued just minutes later as the fire continued to spread.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze largely to the garage and kitchen areas where it first started. The large home is located within a gated community that lacks hydrants, so a tanker shuttle was organized to supply water for the firefighting effort. A total of twelve tankers were deployed, including units from Barrington Countryside, Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Round Lake, Bartlett, Nunda, Libertyville, Fox River Grove, Crystal Lake, Wauconda, Huntley, and McHenry Township.
At the scene, engine companies came from Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Schaumburg, Carpentersville, Algonquin, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Lincolnshire, and Lake Zurich, along with three units from Barrington Countryside. Truck companies arrived from Hoffman Estates and Palatine, while squad units came from Cary and Schaumburg. Ambulances were provided by Barrington, Mount Prospect, and Des Plaines.
This multi-agency response highlights the coordinated effort required to manage such a large-scale fire in a challenging location. Despite the difficulties posed by the lack of hydrants and the intensity of the fire, firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading further. Local residents were kept informed through updates from emergency services, and no injuries have been reported at this time.
