3-Alarm fire in Rockford, 9-2-20 (more)

Excerpts from WIFR.com:

A historic church in Rockford, the former Metro Christian Center, was destroyed in a fire on Wednesday night. The building had been condemned for years, with many of its doors and windows boarded up and no electricity inside. The Rockford Fire Department has launched an arson investigation into the blaze, which marks the end of an era for a long-standing downtown landmark.

As the fire raged, thick clouds of smoke blanketed the downtown area, and dozens of fire trucks surrounded the structure as parts of the roof collapsed onto the street below. Firefighters reported that the fire spread rapidly due to the wooden construction of the building. They were unable to enter the structure because of the presence of asbestos on the rooftop, which made it too dangerous to approach. Estimated damages are now around $300,000.

Fire crews worked through the night alongside demolition teams to bring the fire under control and eliminate any remaining hot spots. The site is now being prepared for further assessment and potential removal of the damaged structure.
