Excerpts from WIFR.com:
One of Rockford’s oldest churches, the former Metro Christian Center, was reduced to ashes on Wednesday night. The building had been in disrepair for years, with many windows and doors boarded up, and no electricity inside. The Rockford Fire Department has launched an arson investigation, as the cause of the fire remains unknown. For decades, the church stood as a prominent landmark in downtown Rockford.
Smoke from the massive fire blanketed the city center, while dozens of fire trucks surrounded the structure as parts of the roof collapsed onto the street below. Firefighters reported that the wooden construction contributed to the rapid spread of flames. Due to the presence of asbestos on the rooftop, crews did not enter the building. The estimated damage is around $300,000.
Throughout the night, fire crews worked alongside demolition teams to bring the fire under control and eliminate hotspots. Despite the efforts, the destruction was extensive, and the historic site now stands in ruins.
