Barn fire in Mettawa, 1-9-18

On Monday afternoon, January 9, 2018, firefighters from Libertyville and neighboring departments responded to a serious barn fire at 14060 Old School Road in Mettawa. The incident began when Countryside Fire Department's Chief 4100 arrived first on scene and confirmed a working fire. Firefighters quickly connected to a hydrant across the street, managing to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. Despite their efforts, the four-stall barn was completely destroyed. Fortunately, all the horses were able to escape, though some smaller animals did not survive the blaze. The alarm was later upgraded to a Box Alarm, signaling a change of quarters, and the full box assignment was completed shortly after. A large number of units were dispatched to the scene, including two engines, a quint, an ambulance, and a battalion chief from Libertyville. Additional resources came from Countryside, Knollwood, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Gurnee, Wauconda, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods. Chiefs from Countryside, Lake Forest, Mundelein, and Libertyville also arrived to manage the operation. Multiple photos from the scene captured the intensity of the fire and the coordinated response. These images include firefighters operating a hose line, using an axe to break down a door, and various fire trucks and personnel on site. The photos were taken by Jeff Rudolph and Larry Shapiro, with more available at Shapirophotography.net.
