The Decatur Fire Department’s Engine 6, the truck that firefighter Micah “Bubba†Wakeman rode to save countless lives, was also the vehicle that carried him home on Tuesday. A 16-year veteran of the department, Wakeman, who lived in Mount Pulaski and had a deep love for farming, passed away on June 13 after a tragic tractor rollover accident. He was just 43 years old and left behind a wife and four children.
Firefighters from across Central Illinois gathered to honor Wakeman, paying their final respects with a heartfelt salute. As the funeral procession began, an honor guard carried his casket out of the church, while others raised their hands in a slow-motion salute. The procession moved slowly, led by squad cars from both the Decatur Police Department and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, symbolizing unity and respect.
The 3-mile journey to Warrensburg was filled with fire trucks, police cars, and emergency vehicles, creating a solemn yet powerful tribute. Along the way, the procession passed beneath a ceremonial arch formed by two aerial ladder trucks holding up a bright, fluttering American flag. The sunny weather mirrored the tone of the service—more of a celebration of life than a mourning of loss. Wakeman’s family and friends described it as a tribute to a man who lived fully and made a lasting impact.
Wakeman’s friend Tracy Dyer said, “This is not a funeral—it’s a celebration. It’s about how one small man has touched so many lives, from Uganda to Haiti, Guatemala to Ukraine.â€
A devoted Christian, Wakeman traveled globally for mission work and also served as a foster parent to children in need. Colleagues remember him as a caring, hardworking, and selfless individual who always put others first. His life was defined by service and compassion.
While the service was filled with laughter and stories of joy, the sorrow of losing such a beloved man was also evident. At times, mourners could be heard sobbing as messages were shared. One particularly moving moment came when 20-year-old daughter Ashton read a message to her father, expressing how she struggled to find the right words to say.
“But the thing I can think to say, and the thing we all need to say, is ‘thank you’… thank you, God, for letting us have some of my daddy in our lives, because not many people are blessed with a Micah Wakeman,†she said.
As the service came to an end, a quiet fell over the church. A single firefighter then rang a bell nine times—three sets of three rings—a traditional firefighter salute to honor a fallen comrade. It was a touching and emotional moment for all in attendance.
In a gesture of solidarity, firefighters from Springfield and Champaign covered Decatur’s fire stations so that local firefighters could attend the service. More than 100 active and retired members of the Decatur FD were present, showing the deep bond they shared with Wakeman.
