Elgin FD awards ceremony

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

On Tuesday evening, the Elgin Fire Department held its annual awards ceremony, celebrating dozens of individuals who went above and beyond in their roles. This was the first formal event of its kind in over a decade, thanks to the efforts of a newly reorganized committee led by Lt. Dan Wagner, according to Fire Chief John Fahy.

The committee reviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of documents detailing the actions of the fire department, which handles up to 12,000 emergency calls annually. "Many of the honorees did more than what was expected," Fahy said. "They made that extra effort to do what was right."

Among those recognized was 11-year-old Nathan Pagnoni, who quickly alerted his grandmother to a garage fire. “I was really scared,” he recalled. “But it felt good to help.” He also enjoyed the experience of meeting the firefighters and taking photos with them.

Dawn Stoner of Advocate Sherman Hospital played a key role in organizing a large-scale terrorism training exercise involving 12 fire departments and other agencies at the hospital’s Center Street location.

A father-and-son team, Don Michael Bush and Michael Sean Bush, were honored for helping put out a kitchen fire and later organizing a fundraiser for the affected family.

Nurse Angela Flintz used an automated external defibrillator on a man who collapsed during an Elgin Township Triad meeting. Andrew J. Robinson helped control a small fire using a garden hose, while employees Nohemi C. Farfan and Jasmine Becerra from Burlington Coat Factory swiftly responded to a clothing rack fire.

Several firefighters received the department's first-ever Phoenix Awards for saving lives during full cardiorespiratory arrests. One team rescued a man who overdosed on heroin, while another saved a man who stopped breathing at a nursing home.

A team was also recognized for performing an emergency cricothyrotomy on a gunshot victim, and another for saving an infant who was choking.

Two Meijer grocery store employees, Joseph A. Kearns and Sean R. Markwood, were honored posthumously for performing CPR and using an AED on someone who suffered a cardiac arrest, even though they couldn’t attend the ceremony.

The department also awarded unit citations to its active shooter and strategic planning committees. Additionally, 28 members of the department — out of a total of 133 — were recognized for their service in the U.S. military.

Thanks Dan
