Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:
On Tuesday evening, the Elgin Fire Department held its annual awards ceremony, celebrating the heroic actions of dozens of individuals who went above and beyond their duties. This was the first formal event of its kind in over a decade, thanks to the efforts of a newly reorganized committee led by Lt. Dan Wagner, as noted by Fire Chief John Fahy.
The committee reviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of documents detailing the department’s responses to up to 12,000 emergency calls annually. Fahy praised the honorees, saying, “Many of them did that extra thing to make it right.â€
Among the recipients was 11-year-old Nathan Pagnoni, who quickly alerted his grandmother to a garage fire. “I was really scared,†he said, but he felt proud when he got to meet the firefighters and take photos with them at the ceremony.
Dawn Stoner of Advocate Sherman Hospital played a key role in organizing a large-scale terrorism training exercise involving 12 fire departments and other agencies. Meanwhile, the father-and-son team of Don Michael Bush and Michael Sean Bush were recognized for helping put out a kitchen fire and later organizing a fundraiser for the affected family.
Nurse Angela Flintz used an automated external defibrillator on a man who collapsed during an Elgin Township Triad meeting. Andrew J. Robinson helped extinguish a small fire using a garden hose, while Nohemi C. Farfan and Jasmine Becerra from Burlington Coat Factory responded swiftly to a clothing rack fire.
Several firefighters received the department’s first-ever Phoenix Awards for saving lives during full cardiorespiratory arrest. One team saved a man who overdosed on heroin, while another team revived a man who had stopped breathing at a nursing home.
A team was also honored for performing an emergency cricothyrotomy on a gunshot victim, and another for rescuing an infant who was choking. Two Meijer employees, Joseph A. Kearns and Sean R. Markwood, who couldn’t attend the event, were recognized for performing CPR and using an AED on someone experiencing cardiac arrest.
The department’s active shooter and strategic planning committees received unit citations, and 28 members of the Elgin Fire Department—out of 133 total—were acknowledged for their military service.
Thanks, Dan.
