On Saturday morning, September 9, 2017, just before 6:30 a.m., Buffalo Grove police and fire units were dispatched to 96 University Drive after a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the residence. Police officers arrived first and began ringing the doorbell and knocking on the doors in an attempt to wake the homeowners.
Arlington Heights Engine 4 and Buffalo Grove Tower 25 quickly responded and stretched a hose line toward the front door before making entry. Smoke was visible from the second floor, and the first floor was heavily filled with smoke. As the door was forced open, thick smoke pushed out from the entrance.
The alarm was upgraded to Code 4 for a working fire, and two additional ambulances were sent to the scene after it was reported that three people might be inside the house. Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the blaze and search for any potential victims.
Neighbors later informed the police that the vehicles in the driveway did not belong to the homeowners, and their own car was missing. A primary and secondary search confirmed that the only occupants at the time were two cats. Despite the firefighters' efforts to resuscitate them, the cats did not survive.

Cutting Disc and Grinding Stone
Cutting discs are used as part of machines such as angle grinders to cut through hard, thick materials. These flat, thin and round discs look similar in shape to DVDs or compact discs and are able to cut through wood, concrete, stone and variety of metals, such as aluminium and steel. A grindstone is a round sharpening stone used for grinding or sharpening ferrous tools. Grindstone machines usually have pedals for speeding up and slowing down the stone to control the sharpening process.
