According to industry sources, each cubic metre of soda ash produced 10 cubic meters of spent lye, with a solid content of about 3%. Corresponding to the huge capacity of more than 28 million tons, a potentially terrible pollution figure can be deduced. Due to the large amount of waste lye, it is very difficult to deal with. Therefore, many alkali plants use the method of dam construction, temporarily storing the waste alkali residue on the beach for volatilization and solidification. Because the dam foundation is built on the soft muddy mud, and it has been built higher and higher, it has generally exceeded 10 meters, and thus exists at the dangerous time of the dam break.

In fact, the treatment of spent lye and alkaline slag is not a process that is too complicated and technically difficult. First of all, companies must be willing to invest funds to purchase special equipment, increase their daily disposal capacity, and minimize or not create new accumulations. Second, they must have awareness of environmental protection, scientific construction, strengthen the dam foundation, and strengthen supervision and maintenance of the dam during the rainy season. However, due to soaring soda prices since the second half of last year, the soda ash price has continued to fall from a high of 2,000 yuan, and the current decline has been as high as 30%. As companies continue to suffer losses, their funds are stretched, and environmental protection investment will inevitably be weakened.

The good news is that some companies with high sense of responsibility have made unremitting efforts. For example, Lianyungang Soda Plant has invested tens of millions of yuan in recent years, and has purchased five vertical plate and frame filter presses from the Netherlands. The efficiency is high and the degree of automation is high. The processing capacity is 220 cubic meters per hour and can handle this enterprise. Two-thirds of the daily spent lye. Through pressure filtration, the alkali residue can be used in road construction and other construction projects after being compacted and strengthened.

It is reported that as the alkali residue dam foundation is built on tofu-like mud, once the pressure is too high, it may cause slippage of the underlying silt layer, which will cause the dam body to slip until it collapses. Therefore, in the construction of the new slag yard, riprap construction should be selected to strengthen the dam foundation; for the old slag yard, advanced techniques should be adopted to increase the strength of the mud, widen the thickening of the dam foundation, and increase the bearing capacity; in addition, active introduction of alkali slag Curing technology, such as adding curing agents, increases the solid reliability of the soda heap.

Lianyungang, director of the Ann-environmental Department of Lianyungang Soda Plant, told the reporter: “In order to avoid environmental pollution by alkali slag, enterprises should not only increase the daily waste alkali treatment, but also implement scientific reinforcement for the inherent alkali dam on the beach.
