New fire station for Elburn FPD (more)

Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com:

Fire trucks started arriving at the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District’s new station on Route 38 in Elburn on Monday morning.

After 14 months of construction and years of careful planning, the new facility—located east of Route 47 and on the north side of Route 38—was full of energy on its first day of operation. Assistant Fire Chief Tate Haley, who has been leading the project, shared some key details about the new station.

The new station is significantly larger than the previous one, which was located at 210 E. North St. in Elburn. The district serves not only Elburn but also surrounding areas like the Mill Creek subdivision. With new development beginning near the station, the local population is expected to grow in the coming years.

Funding for the project came entirely from the fire department, with no additional public funds needed. Initial estimates had put the cost between $8 million and $10 million, and according to Haley, the final price came very close to the upper end of that range.

An open house is scheduled for December 13, giving residents a chance to tour the new facility. Visitors will see more interactive displays and spaces dedicated to public education. Previously, these items were stored in boxes and only brought out for special events like the annual Christmas Stroll.

The station has three levels. The main floor includes offices, meeting rooms, training spaces, and a kitchen. The lower level houses a fitness center, which firefighters previously used a separate building for, located where ambulances once were stationed. It also features an emergency operations center and a large training room.

There will also be a small museum area featuring an old fire wheel that had been on display at the old station for years, though many residents may not have even noticed it.

The upper level contains 15 sleeping bunks, a large multipurpose room, and a patio. Instead of a traditional fire pole, firefighters can use a slide to go from the second-floor living area directly to the apparatus bay. There's also a training tower that doubles as a space for drying hoses and conducting rescue and confined space training exercises.
