Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
A brave K9 officer from Kenosha, who is now being hailed as a hero, was celebrated by a large crowd on Sunday after he was shot during a confrontation with a Chicago murder suspect last week.
The German Shepherd, K9 Riggs, was injured when he was shot in the head while tackling a suspect who is accused of killing two people in Chicago earlier this week. Miraculously, Riggs survived the attack and is currently recovering at a hospital in Buffalo Grove.
A special welcome home ceremony took place in Clausen Park, where Riggs was brought in a procession from the animal hospital. Local residents, fellow police officers, and other K9 units gathered to honor the brave dog’s courage and dedication.
The incident began on Thursday when a 25-year-old man was fatally shot at a bus stop in the Hermosa neighborhood. Just a short distance away, the same suspect allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Miguel Padilla Junior during a struggle. According to authorities, the suspect then stole Padilla’s car and fled the scene.
Chicago police later alerted Kenosha County deputies about a suspect driving the stolen vehicle. The suspect was spotted at a gas station in Bristol, and when confronted, he ran off with a gun. That's when K9 Riggs tackled the suspect as he tried to escape toward the highway. In the struggle, the suspect shot Riggs once in the forehead. Despite the injury, Riggs managed to subdue the suspect until backup arrived. Two deputies then fired on the suspect, hitting him in the abdomen and leg, and he was taken into custody.
Riggs, who has served with the Kenosha Police Department for five years, is expected to make a full recovery. His actions have not only saved lives but also inspired many in the community, showing the incredible bond between law enforcement and their four-legged partners.
