North of the border – Kenosha County, WI

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A brave Kenosha police dog, hailed as a hero, was celebrated by a large crowd on Sunday after being shot by a Chicago murder suspect last week.

The German Shepherd K9, named Riggs, was injured during a tense police encounter with a man who is accused of killing two people in Chicago on Thursday. Miraculously, the loyal canine survived the attack and is now recovering.

A special welcome home event was held in Clausen Park for Riggs, who had been recovering at an animal hospital in Buffalo Grove. The event drew a large number of residents, fellow officers, and other K9 units, all showing their support and gratitude for Riggs' bravery.

The incident began when a 25-year-old man was fatally shot at a bus stop in the Hermosa neighborhood. Moments later, the same suspect allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Miguel Padilla Junior during a struggle. Police later found out that the suspect had stolen Padilla’s car and was driving it when he was spotted at a gas station in Bristol.

When Kenosha County deputies approached the suspect at the Benson Corners gas station, he fled while holding a gun. Riggs immediately gave chase, tackling the suspect as he tried to escape toward the nearby highway. In the process, the suspect shot Riggs once in the forehead. Despite the injury, Riggs remained steadfast, allowing officers to subdue the suspect. Two deputies then returned fire, hitting the suspect in the abdomen and leg.

Riggs, who has served with the Kenosha Police Department for five years, is expected to make a full recovery. His actions have not only saved lives but also inspired many within the community and law enforcement.
