Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the Wheeling Fire Department received a call about workers feeling unwell at a local manufacturing plant. Upon arrival at 750 Northgate Parkway, firefighters detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide and immediately evacuated the building. They began ventilating the area while working to identify the source, which was later traced to a piece of machinery. One worker initially showed symptoms and was taken to a nearby hospital. Soon after, several others reported similar issues, prompting an EMS Box Alarm to be issued for additional ambulances.
Emergency responders from Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Northbrook, and Buffalo Grove arrived on scene. As more workers came forward with symptoms, the alarm was escalated to the second level, bringing in ambulances from Prospect Heights, Highland Park, Barrington, Glenview, and Des Plaines, along with two from Wheeling. A triage area was set up, and multiple patients were treated and transported. The situation remained under control as firefighters worked to lower CO levels to safe levels.
Larry Shapiro was on-site and captured several key moments. His photos show ambulances arriving, patients being transported, and firefighters monitoring the ventilation process. At one point, a group of workers waited outside while crews worked to clear the air. Eventually, 13 workers were taken to four different hospitals, and the Box Alarm was called off. The remaining ambulances were released without further incidents.
Meanwhile, neighboring Buffalo Grove responded to a small fire just a block away, assisted by an Arlington Heights ambulance and Northbrook Tower 12. More photos from the incident can be viewed in the gallery below.
