China Should Strengthen the Recycling of Used Tires

In recent years, China's annual production of used tires has increased from 8% to 10%. In 2010, the amount of waste tires produced in China was about 250 million, and the recycling rate was only about 50%, which was less than 30% of that in Western developed countries, resulting in enormous waste of resources.

At the same time, in some parts of China, waste tires are still burned, landfilled, and other original treatment methods, and even discarded at will, causing "black pollution." Waste tires are poisonous and harmful solid wastes. They have strong resistance to heat and degradation, and will not degrade in the ground for 100 years.

Affected by climatic conditions, only Hainan, Yunnan, and other places in the country can plant rubber trees in small quantities, and the annual output of natural rubber is only about 600,000 tons. The potential for increasing output in the future is not great.

According to Jiang Zhiyun, former president of the China Tire Renovation and Recycling Association, China consumes more than 7 million tons of rubber every year. More than 70% of natural rubber and more than 40% of synthetic rubber are imported. Since 2004, China's natural rubber self-sufficiency rate has been lower than the one-third of the country's strategic security warning line, which has dropped to less than 25% at this stage.

“China has a rubber gap of up to several million tons, and exports more than 300 million tires and a large amount of rubber-containing products to foreign countries. The contradiction between supply and demand is extremely prominent.” said Wu Yinghong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Rehabilitation Rubber Branch of the China Tyre Renovation and Recycling Association. Enhance the recycling of used tires and increase the support for the relevant industries without delay.

At present, there are mainly three ways to recycle waste tires in the country: One is to use its powder to lay roads, which can save a large amount of asphalt; second, to produce reclaimed rubber after desulfurization to produce hoses, rubber pads, etc. Adding new tires can save a lot of natural rubber and synthetic rubber. Third, pyrolytic decomposition of important oils, carbon black and other important chemical raw materials.

Recycling old tires can be used to retread tires. There are hundreds of tire retreading companies in the country, but the renovation rate is only about 3%, which is not only far below the renovation rate of about 14% in the United States, the world's largest tire refurbishment country, but also lower than the world average 6% renovation rate.
