At just after 1 a.m., Libertyville firefighters, along with automatic-aid companies, responded to a fire at 1470 Greenbriar Drive in Green Oaks. A homeowner was awakened by their smoke alarm and noticed a van outside on fire that had begun spreading to the attached garage.
The first arriving engine reported flames visible through the roof of the garage and quickly made an initial attack using their deck gun. After the tank water was exhausted, a tanker arrived to support the engine, allowing a hand line to be deployed. A shuttle system was established, with successive tankers continuously supplying water to the Libertyville tanker, which in turn supported the engine working from the driveway.
The incident was escalated to a Box Alarm, bringing multiple tankers to the scene. The neighborhood lacks hydrants, so the operation relied heavily on water shuttles. Although the garage and its contents were significantly damaged, the fire did not spread into the main house. About an hour later, the box was struck out, and crews began to disperse.
Photos from the scene show firefighters working under challenging conditions, including a rain-soaked night. Several images capture the efforts of the fire department, including a Pierce engine equipped with a light tower, a tender nursing another unit, and the charred remains of the van that started the fire. The garage was completely destroyed, but the home remained intact thanks to quick response and effective firefighting tactics.
