CFD firefighter shot by CPD (updated and corrected)

Not Always Trust the First Reports:

At 4:06 PM, the Chicago Tribune published an updated story about a disturbing incident that unfolded in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood. According to authorities, an off-duty Chicago firefighter was shot by police after he exited a vehicle and appeared to raise a weapon toward officers at a CVS pharmacy on 103rd Street and Pulaski Road.

The firefighter was seen in a shooting stance, holding a dark object in his hand, when he was shot around 12:45 PM. The item turned out to be his wallet, as confirmed by Patrick Camden, a spokesperson for the Fraternal Order of Police. Initially, officials had reported that the man had died, but later updates indicated he was in critical condition and undergoing surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center. His condition was later described as stable.

Earlier reports suggested that the firefighter had opened fire on responding officers after being called to the scene due to a report of a man threatening suicide. However, the revised account from Camden revealed that the firefighter’s wife had contacted police, expressing concern over his mental state and mentioning that he had access to a gun. The firefighter was on medical leave and had a history of depression, according to Camden.

Police initially believed the man was at a pharmacy on 111th Street, but when no one matching his description was found there, they moved to the CVS on 103rd Street. There, they located him in the driver's seat of his car, speaking on the phone. Officers asked him to show his hands and exit the vehicle. Instead, he made the sign of the cross, opened the door, and jumped out with his hands in a "combat position," holding a dark object that looked like a gun.

No weapon was found at the scene, but a gun was recovered from the firefighter’s home. Records also indicate that the man was not only a firefighter but also a paramedic, and he lived just two miles away from the location of the incident.

Earlier, at 2:27 PM, the Tribune had reported that a Chicago Fire Department employee was shot and killed by police after opening fire on officers who were responding to a report of a man threatening suicide. The incident occurred at the same CVS location, and the man was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

This evolving story highlights how initial reports can change as more details come to light, underscoring the importance of waiting for official updates before drawing conclusions.

Thanks, Dennis.
