Initial reports can be misleading:
At 4:06 PM, the Chicago Tribune published an updated report with new details about the incident involving a Chicago firefighter who was shot by police. According to authorities, the off-duty firefighter was in a store parking lot in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood when he jumped out of a car and appeared to point a weapon at officers.
The firefighter was seen in a shooting stance, holding a dark object in his hand, when he was shot around 12:45 PM at a CVS Pharmacy located on 103rd and Pulaski Road. The object turned out to be his wallet, as confirmed by Patrick Camden, a spokesperson for the Fraternal Order of Police.
The man was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and was undergoing surgery. Initially, officials reported that he had died, but later updates stated his condition was stable. Earlier statements from officials suggested that the firefighter had opened fire on responding officers after they arrived due to a report of a suicidal man.
According to Camden, the firefighter’s wife had contacted police earlier, expressing concern over his mental state and mentioning he had a gun. The firefighter was on medical leave and had a history of depression, he added.
Police were initially told the man was either at a pharmacy on 111th Street or 103rd Street. When they didn’t find him at the first location, they went to the CVS on 103rd Street, where they found him in the driver's seat of his car, talking on the phone.
Officers asked him to show his hands and exit the vehicle. He made the sign of the cross, opened the door, and jumped out with his hands in a "combat position," holding a dark object that looked like a gun, according to Camden.
No weapon was found at the scene, but one was later recovered at his home. The firefighter is also a paramedic and lives about two miles away from the location of the incident.
Earlier, at 2:27 PM, the Chicago Tribune had released a different version of the story, stating that a Chicago Fire Department employee was shot and killed by police after opening fire on officers responding to a report of a man threatening suicide. Officials confirmed that the man worked for the Chicago Fire Department and was shot at the CVS Pharmacy on 103rd Street.
The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. This update came after initial reports had indicated he had already passed away.
As more information comes in, it’s clear that the situation is more complex than initially reported. It highlights the importance of waiting for official updates before drawing conclusions.
Thanks, Dennis.
