Fluorochrome coating application situation is gratifying

With the rapid growth of China's national economy, the demand for paint in the domestic market is increasingly shifting toward the "three highs and one low" trend—high decoration, high weather resistance, high functionality, and low pollution. Among various types of coatings, fluorine coatings have emerged as a promising solution that aligns with this evolving market direction. The global fluorine coating industry began in the 1940s, but China’s market only started to gain momentum in the late 1990s. With the country’s economic resurgence at the start of the 21st century, infrastructure projects and industrial production boomed. Supported by government initiatives and industry efforts, the past six years have seen significant progress in the application of fluorine coatings across multiple sectors, marking a period of rapid and encouraging development. One of the most prominent areas is architectural decoration. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fluorine coatings have long been successfully used in aluminum curtain walls in Europe and North America. However, due to foreign companies' control over resin production technology, the cost has remained high. Additionally, the need for high-temperature curing has limited their widespread use in China. In contrast, domestic companies have made significant advancements in producing room-temperature-curing FEVE fluororesins using chlorotrifluoroethylene and tetrafluoroethylene. Japanese firms like Asahi Glass, Daikin, and DIC have led the way, and their large-scale products have gained popularity in China’s building exterior wall applications. These coatings are typically metallic silver-gray, hence often referred to as “fluorocarbon metal paint.” They are more affordable and can be applied on-site, making them a preferred choice for many architects. With recent improvements in waterborne technology and the emergence of fluorine-containing acrylic resins, along with successful integration with insulation boards, the architectural decoration sector is expected to witness another wave of growth. In addition to construction, fluorine coatings play a vital role in industrial corrosion protection. Their excellent weather resistance and chemical inertness make them ideal for protecting structures such as steel bridges, ships, rail transit vehicles, oil storage tanks, pipelines, chemical facilities, aircraft, and color steel plates. Japan has already incorporated fluorine coatings into its bridge design standards. In China, they have been widely used in major projects like the Beijing Olympic Stadium, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and the Hangzhou Bay Bridge. As the industrial economy continues to grow and market recognition of fluorine coatings’ superior performance increases, the anti-corrosion sector is set to become the core battleground for the Chinese fluorine coating industry. Beyond these areas, fluorine coatings have also established a mature presence in fields like household appliances and medical equipment. Fluoropolymer-based powder coatings, such as PTFE, ETFE, PCTFE, and ECTFE, are used for non-stick surfaces in kitchenware and corrosion-resistant linings in chemical equipment. Despite the positive developments, challenges remain. Domestic FEVE fluororesins still face issues with color consistency, transparency, storage stability, and batch-to-batch quality. The range of resin types also needs improvement, with PVDF, fluorine-containing acrylic resins, waterborne fluorine resins, powder fluorine resins, and electrophoretic fluorine resins requiring further localization. Moreover, problems like cutthroat competition among companies must be addressed. To foster healthy market growth, the Fluorine Coatings Special Committee of the China Chemical Society will hold its eighth annual meeting in Ningbo, Zhejiang, from October 15th to 19th. This event will provide a platform for sharing new industry developments and discussing future market trends.
