Fluorochrome coating application situation is gratifying

With the rapid growth of the national economy, the demand for paint in the domestic market is increasingly trending toward "three highs and one low"—high decoration, high weather resistance, high functionality, and low pollution. Among various types of coatings, fluorine coatings have emerged as a promising solution that aligns with this evolving trend. The global fluorine coating market began in the 1940s, while China's fluorine coating industry only started gaining momentum in the late 1990s. With the rise of economic growth at the beginning of this century, large-scale infrastructure projects and industrial production activities surged. Combined with government support and industry initiatives, the past six years have seen significant progress in the application of fluorine coatings across multiple sectors, showing impressive and fast-paced development. One of the key areas is architectural decoration. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fluorine coatings have been widely used in aluminum curtain walls in Europe and North America for many years. However, the resin production technology was long dominated by foreign companies, leading to high costs. Additionally, the need for high-temperature curing has limited their adoption in China. In contrast, domestic fluororesin companies have made great strides in developing room-temperature-curing FEVE fluororesins using chlorotrifluoroethylene and tetrafluoroethylene as primary raw materials. Companies like Japan’s Asahi Glass, Daikin, and DIC have introduced large-scale products, making room-temperature fluorine coatings popular for exterior wall cladding in China. These coatings are typically metallic silver-gray, hence often referred to as “fluorocarbon metal paint.” They are cost-effective and can be applied on-site, which is why many design institutes now incorporate them into architectural plans. With recent advancements in waterborne technology and the introduction of fluorine-containing acrylic resins, along with successful integration with insulation boards, the future of fluorine coatings in construction looks very promising. Another major area is industrial corrosion protection. Fluorine-based coatings offer excellent weather resistance and chemical inertness, making them ideal for protecting structures such as steel buildings, bridges, ships, rail transit vehicles, oil tanks, pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft skins, and color steel plates. Japan has already included fluorine coatings in its bridge design standards. In recent years, China has also applied these coatings to major projects like the Beijing Olympic Stadium, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and the Hangzhou Bay Bridge. As the industrial economy continues to grow and the market becomes more aware of the exceptional performance of fluorine coatings, the field of anti-corrosion will become a central focus for the Chinese fluorine coating industry. In addition, fluorine coatings have established a mature market in fields such as household appliances and medical equipment. Fluoropolymer-based powder coatings, including PTFE, ETFE, PCTFE, and ECTFE, are used for non-stick surfaces on kitchen appliances and corrosion-resistant linings in chemical equipment. Despite the positive developments, challenges remain. For instance, the color consistency, transparency, storage stability, and batch-to-batch quality of domestically produced FEVE fluororesins still need improvement. The range of resin varieties also needs simplification, and local production of PVDF, fluorine-containing acrylic resins, waterborne fluororesins, powder fluororesins, and electrophoretic fluororesins must be further advanced. Moreover, issues such as unfair competition among companies require better regulation. To promote the healthy development of the fluorine coating market in China, the Fluorine Coatings Special Committee of the China Chemical Society will hold its eighth annual meeting in Ningbo, Zhejiang, from October 15th to 19th. During the event, participants will share updates on industry innovations and discuss the future direction of the fluorine coating market.
