The "863 Program" national project led by Wuhan Heavy-duty Machine Tool Co., Ltd. – the development of a heavy-duty vertical seven-axis five-link motor-milling compound processing machine tool – has successfully passed the national acceptance review. The expert panel overseeing the inspection praised the machine tool as a groundbreaking achievement, marking the first time China has developed a high-performance composite machining system with independent intellectual property rights.
After three years of collaborative research and development between industry, academia, and production units, the prototype machine has been successfully completed. This advanced machine tool features a maximum turning diameter of 8,000 mm, a height of 2,000 mm, and can handle workpieces weighing up to 100 tons. It is not only capable of precision milling but also performs blade surface cutting for propellers. By integrating turning and milling functions, it enables the simultaneous machining of multiple surfaces of a propeller, ensuring high accuracy in both the profile shape and the relative positioning of each machined surface. This significantly enhances the overall quality and efficiency of propeller manufacturing.
The project was jointly carried out by Wu Zhong, the National CNC System Engineering Technology Research Center at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Zhenjiang Ship Propeller Factory. The technical evaluation and product acceptance meeting was organized by an expert group appointed by the Office of Advanced Manufacturing and Automation Technology under the National 863 Program. This milestone represents a major step forward in China's efforts to develop high-end manufacturing equipment and reduce reliance on foreign technology.
