As of December 19, 2007, the CNPC Tarim Oilfield Company achieved an annual natural gas output of 15 billion cubic meters, marking its position as China's largest natural gas production area. This milestone fulfilled the long-held dream of generations of oil workers who had dedicated themselves to developing the vast oil and gas fields in the Tarim Basin.
Since the 1950s, multiple generations of oil professionals have taken on the responsibility of achieving a strategic shift in China’s energy resources. They ventured into the harsh desert environment, searching for oil and gas reserves. After several failed attempts, they persisted, pushing boundaries and challenging limits, which eventually led to the formation of the "hardship and perseverance" spirit. Their efforts not only solved a series of world-class technical challenges but also led to the discovery of large-scale oil and gas fields such as Hude, Tazhong, and Dina, with the Kela 2 gas field being a prominent example.
The discovery of natural gas in the Tarim region significantly accelerated the implementation of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project. It also drove rapid development in natural gas exploration and production within the basin. In 2000, the oilfield produced just 800 million cubic meters of natural gas. By 2006, this figure had surged to 10 billion cubic meters, and by 2007, it reached an estimated 15.56 billion cubic meters—doubling in just two years. This remarkable growth highlights the transformative impact of the Tarim Oilfield on China’s energy landscape.
