Ship Management Information System (SMIS) is a well-established and widely recognized ship management information system developed through the collaborative efforts of Shanghai Maritime University and COSCON School and Enterprise. Over the years, it has been successfully implemented on hundreds of vessels, becoming a core component of modern ship management in China. SMIS represents an evolution of the management philosophy adopted by Chinese shipping companies, covering all essential functions of the ship management process. As a pioneering example of maritime informatization, the system has undergone rigorous testing by the National Software Designated Testing Center for performance and functionality. It has received software copyright registration from the State Intellectual Property Office (Company version: soft landing number 018850; Ship version: soft landing number 018851). The system was also evaluated by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission and won the Second Prize of China Navigation Technology and the Shanghai Science and Technology Achievement Award of the Ministry of Communications in 2004. In addition, it obtained the software product registration certificate from the Shanghai Informationization Committee in 2004 (Company version: Shanghai DGY-2004-0400; Ship version: Shanghai DGY-2004-0401). SMIS holds a leading position in the domestic market and is highly regarded for its alignment with China’s unique maritime management practices, making it more suitable than many foreign systems. It has been officially approved by the China Classification Society (software certificate number: CDPM050002) and recognized as a key product by COSCO Group.
The system is designed based on the fundamental concept that “technical management is the foundation, safety control is the core, and cost control is the goal.†It leverages existing network infrastructure and business conditions of China Shipping Management Corporation, employing a distributed topology network to optimize resource utilization. Data exchange between the database server and middleware occurs via routers or hubs, while external communication with terminals is facilitated through a web server over the Internet. Satellite communication ensures regular data synchronization between onboard and shore-based servers, enabling real-time data consistency and resource sharing.
SMIS is divided into two versions: the agency version for company-level management and the ship version for onboard operations. The ship version focuses on technical management, safety control, equipment maintenance, inspections, and operational monitoring. It includes ten functional modules aimed at improving equipment integrity and ensuring safe navigation. The company version emphasizes supervision, safety monitoring, procurement processes, cost control, and decision-making support, featuring twelve modules tailored for comprehensive oversight.
The system integrates standardized data and codes aligned with national and international standards, including GB/T 16558.2-1996, ISO, and IMPA. It incorporates advanced management practices from both domestic and international sources, enhancing efficiency and control over ship operations. Its user-friendly interface supports multiple languages, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese and English, ensuring accessibility without compromising data entry accuracy. The system is designed to be intuitive, requiring minimal technical expertise from users.
Data synchronization between ships and shores is efficient, with a compression rate exceeding 90% and a “no change, no transmission†mechanism to reduce unnecessary data transfer. The system is compatible with existing communication equipment and software, minimizing additional costs. It also supports future expansion and integration with other enterprise systems such as personnel, financial, and logistics platforms. With low hardware requirements and robust backup features, SMIS ensures reliability and security, backed by a firewall to protect against cyber threats. Overall, SMIS stands as a reliable and innovative solution for modern ship management.
