Ship Management Information System (SMIS) is a well-established ship management information system developed through the joint efforts of Shanghai Maritime University and COSCON School and Enterprise. For many years, it has been successfully implemented on hundreds of vessels, reflecting the evolution of China's shipping industry management concepts. SMIS covers all essential functions of the ship management process and stands as a successful example of maritime informatization. The software has undergone rigorous testing by the National Software Designated Testing Center for performance and product quality, and it holds software copyright registration certificates from the State Intellectual Property Office (Company version: Soft Landing Number 018850; Ship version: Soft Landing Number 018851). It was also appraised by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission and received the Second Prize of China Navigation Technology and the Shanghai Science and Technology Achievement Award of the Ministry of Communications in 2004. Additionally, it obtained the software product registration certificate from the Shanghai Informationization Committee in 2004 (Company version: Shanghai DGY-2004-0400; Ship version: Shanghai DGY-2004-0401). SMIS is widely recognized as one of the leading systems in the domestic market.
Compared to similar foreign systems, SMIS is more tailored to China’s specific conditions, aligning with local management models, systems, and operational concepts. It has gained widespread acceptance among domestic shipping companies and professionals. SMIS has been approved by the China Classification Society (software certification number: CDPM050002) and officially recognized by COSCO Group as a promotional product for its branch companies.
The system is designed based on the core principles of “technical management as the foundation, safety control as the core, and cost control as the goal.†It leverages existing network infrastructure and business conditions of China Ship Management Corporation, using a distributed topology network to maximize resource utilization. Data exchange between the database server and middleware is facilitated through routing devices such as hubs or routers, while external communication with terminals is handled via web servers over the Internet. Regular data synchronization between ships and shore-based servers occurs through satellite communication, ensuring consistent data and enabling efficient resource sharing.
SMIS is divided into two versions: the agency version for company-level management and the ship version for onboard operations. The ship version focuses on technical management, safety control, equipment maintenance, inspection scheduling, and monitoring of operational parameters and oil consumption. The company version emphasizes oversight of vessel maintenance, safety monitoring, inspections, repairs, spare parts management, procurement processes, cost control, and decision-making support.
The system features 10 functional modules in the ship version and 12 in the company version. It follows standardized procedures aligned with the company’s safety and quality management system, ensuring smooth operation and improved safety, environmental protection, and crew health. It utilizes national standards for equipment classification, material codes, and data management, incorporating international best practices. The interface is user-friendly, supports both Chinese and English, and is suitable for users with varying levels of computer and language proficiency. Data synchronization between ship and shore is timed and optimized, reducing transmission costs and volume.
The system is designed with scalability in mind, allowing for future upgrades and adaptability to changing business needs. It offers multiple external interfaces for seamless integration with other internal systems and third-party partners. With low hardware requirements, it makes full use of existing resources, helping to minimize initial investment. It includes robust backup and recovery mechanisms, along with network security features like firewalls to prevent virus spread and ensure system integrity.
