Application of NUM CNC System on Double-axle Assembly Turning Machine

The
NUM CNC system features multi-axis groups and multi-channel capabilities, allowing control of up to 8 axis groups. Each group can manage up to 9 interpolated axes, 32 servo axes, and 4 spindles, with each channel operating independently. We successfully upgraded a Japanese OKUMA twin-axis lathe using the NUM1040T, achieving excellent results. **1. Overview of the Machine Tool** The left and right sides of the Japanese OKUMA twin-axis lathe are largely independent, each equipped with its own X and Z axes, spindle, turret tool holder, cooling system, and automatic protection door. However, the lubrication, hydraulic, and chip removal systems are shared between both sides. **2. Control Modes for Two Axis Groups** The NUM1040T CNC system supports control of two axis groups. Each group can handle up to four interpolated axes, six servo axes, and two spindles. The dual-axis configuration allows for two independent channels, each with its own PLC and NC data exchange area, including M codes, T codes, and PLC variables. The system can switch between common and independent axis group modes. In common mode, both groups operate identically, while in independent mode, they can function differently and separately. This is achieved by configuring system parameters and programming the PLC accordingly. **3. Twin-Axis Group System Parameters** - **P97**: Defines the total number of axes in the system. - **P0**: Specifies which axis is displayed on the screen. - **P2**: Defines the measuring axis for the CNC. - **P3**: Sets the servo control and interpolation axes. - **P5**: Defines the type of machine for the axis group. - **P9**: Links the axis name to its actual address. - **P6**: Configures the spindle with measurement functions and defines the spindle type. **4. Twin-Axis Group PLC Variables** - **%W2.2**: Switches between common and independent axis group modes. - **%W17.B**: Selects the axis group for data display. - **%Wg03.B**: Chooses the working mode of an independent axis group (g = 1–8). - **%Wg00.5**: M function response signal for axis group g. - **%Wg01.2**: Cycle start request for axis group g. - **%Wg01.1**: Cycle stop request for axis group g. - **%Wg02.B**: Feedrate override for axis group g. - **%Rg1E.W**: M function code required by axis group g. - **%Rg7C.L**: Tool number for axis group g. **5. User Program for Two-Axis Groups** The multi-axis machining program consists of separate programs for each axis group. Each program has a base sequence number followed by an index indicating the specific group. Subroutines do not require an index. For example: - **%6.1**: Program number for Axis Group 1. - **%6.2**: Program number for Axis Group 2. Tools referenced as **TXX** can have the same number across different groups but don’t need to be the same physical tool. All programs share the same tool offset table. Available program variables include L0–L19, L100–L999, and L900–L959, which can be used per axis group. By utilizing the multi-axis group functionality of the NUM CNC system, users gain a powerful control method for compound machine tools, enabling them to perform the functions of multiple single-axis machines in one unit.
