Buffalo Grove water rescues 6-26-13

The heavy storms that swept through the area on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning brought an overwhelming amount of rainfall, leading to widespread flooding and road closures across several suburbs. Emergency services were overwhelmed as vehicles became stuck in deep water and residents found themselves unable to leave their homes. Local fire departments, including the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, were quickly mobilized to assist with rescues and evacuations. In response to the severe conditions on St. Mary’s Parkway between Raupp Boulevard and Lincoln Terrace, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department activated a MABAS Box Alarm, calling for swift water rescue teams and boats from divisions 1 and 4. Additional support came from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville, and Mount Prospect, along with personnel from neighboring departments. The coordinated effort helped ensure that those trapped by rising waters could be safely evacuated. Larry Shapiro captured a series of powerful images and a video (to be released soon) documenting the rescue operations. His photos show the extent of the flooding, the efforts of first responders, and the determination of residents facing challenging conditions.
