One-car MVA in Wheeling, 4-2-18

On Monday afternoon, firefighters from Wheeling and Prospect Heights were dispatched to 100 E. Palatine Road following a reported vehicle crash. The location is situated on the westbound Palatine frontage road, east of the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, emergency responders were directed to a car that had veered off the road and slid down an embankment, coming to rest beneath a railroad bridge. The single occupant of the vehicle, who appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, was trapped inside and unable to exit on their own. Firefighters used tools to force open the door and carefully removed the individual using a backboard, carrying them up the embankment to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Once the patient was safely transported, a tow truck from Gene’s Towing arrived to lift the car back onto the roadway. The operation took place under the railroad bridge, causing a temporary halt in train traffic for approximately 30 minutes as crews worked to clear the area. Local residents and passersby gathered to watch the scene unfold, with several photographers capturing the incident, including images of the car wedged beneath the bridge, the towing process, and the surrounding area. Emergency personnel worked efficiently to ensure safety and minimize disruption. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no additional injuries were reported. The incident highlights the quick response and coordination between local fire departments and towing services in handling such emergencies.
