Wheeling and Prospect Heights firefighters were called to 100 E. Palatine Road on Monday afternoon after reports of a vehicle accident. The location is on the westbound Palatine frontage road, east of the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, emergency crews were directed to a car that had veered off the road and rolled down an embankment, coming to rest beneath a railroad bridge. The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was unable to exit on their own. Firefighters used tools to break open the door and carefully transported the patient up the slope using a backboard before taking them to a local hospital.
Once the injured individual was safely removed, a tow truck from Gene’s Towing was brought in to lift the car back onto the road. The operation required the temporary shutdown of train traffic in the area for about 30 minutes while crews worked beneath the bridge. The incident caused some delays but no further injuries were reported.
Photos from the scene show the car wedged under the railroad overpass, with emergency personnel and tow operators working to clear the area. The event highlights the challenges of responding to accidents near railway crossings, where coordination between emergency services and transportation authorities is essential. Local residents were advised to remain cautious in the area as cleanup continued.
