Screw pumps have a rich history of development, beginning in 1932 when the single-screw pump was invented by French engineer Moineau and later manufactured by the German company PCM Pump. In 1931, the three-screw pump was developed and produced by the Swedish company IMO. In the early 1960s, China's Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory pioneered the development of a high-pressure marine small-volume three-screw pump, eventually expanding into a specialized manufacturer of single, double, and triple screw pumps. Meanwhile, Shenyang Pump Factory began producing double and triple screw pumps in the mid-1960s and successfully developed a five-screw pump in the 1970s. In 1984, Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory introduced Allweiler’s manufacturing technology along with UK Holroyd’s 2AC screw milling machines and related equipment, marking the start of large-scale production of screw pumps in China—though it had lagged behind global standards by over two decades.
Since 1984, the Chinese screw pump industry has grown significantly. Today, there are approximately 30 professional manufacturers across the country. Key players include:
- **Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory**: Introduced Allweiler’s technology in 1984 and acquired 2AC screw milling machines from Holroyd in the UK. In 1993, it further integrated Bornemann technology from Germany and a CNC screw whirlwind milling machine from Linsinger in Austria. By 1998, it also adopted the HNC35SL high-precision screw grinder from Klingelnberg. The factory produces around 6,000 units annually, including single, double, and triple screw pumps.
- **Shishou Pump Factory**: Acquired Czechoslovakian technology and hollow-tube single-screw pump rotor equipment in 1989.
- **Xian Far East Machinery Manufacturing Company’s Curved Rod Pump Plant**: Produces approximately 600 single-screw pumps annually.
Other notable manufacturers include Hangzhou Pump Plant, Lanzhou Pump Factory, Zhejiang Dongyang Screw Pump Factory, Shanghai Light Industry Machinery Technology Research Institute, Jingjiang Chemical Machinery Factory, Wuxi Liangzhong Screw Pump Factory, Beijing Petroleum Machinery Factory, Jiaxing Oil Machinery Factory, Zhongcheng Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and more.
For twin-screw pumps, apart from the day pump and sink pump, Jiangsu Huaiyin General Machinery Factory and Guangzhou Shipyard Machinery Factory also produce them, with annual outputs generally in the hundreds. Three-screw pump production is limited to a few factories, such as Nanjing Industrial Pump Factory and Shanghai Hydraulic Machinery Factory, with low output levels. Five-screw pumps are extremely rare, with only one plant producing them, which has since been transferred to another facility.
China’s total annual output of single, double, three, and five-screw pumps is approximately 10,000 units, with three-screw pumps being the most produced, accounting for over half of the total. Single and twin-screw pumps follow, while five-screw pump production remains minimal.
In terms of materials and manufacturing, screw pump rotors must withstand harsh conditions, so they are made from high-quality alloys like 38CrMoAl, 40Cr, 20Cr13, 16Mn, CrS5, and sometimes stainless steels such as CrNi, CrMo, and CrNiMo. These materials are often nitrided to achieve a hardness of HRc 56–65. Most manufacturers use a process of rough milling followed by nitriding, but Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory uses a more advanced method: rough milling → nitriding → rough grinding.
Despite growth, many companies still lack advanced production equipment, highlighting the urgent need for a fully equipped, technologically advanced professional screw pump factory in China.
