Nissan Renault Wants to Join GM

Nissan Motor has revealed plans to engage in preliminary discussions with General Motors (GM) about a potential partnership that could reshape the automotive industry. The proposal aims to integrate GM into the existing alliance between Nissan and Renault, marking a significant shift in the landscape of global car manufacturing. The news was first reported by Kirk Kerkorian, the largest individual shareholder of GM, on June 30. In response, Nissan released a statement indicating that if GM’s shareholders support the proposal, the company's board will approve initial talks between Nissan and GM to explore an alliance. The Nissan and Renault boards have authorized CEO Carlos Ghosn to lead negotiations with GM. Ghosn recently secured the backing of Kerkorian, who holds a 9.9% stake in GM and has been advocating for the deal. However, both Nissan and Renault emphasized that the proposal must receive unanimous approval from GM’s board before any formal steps are taken. As of now, no such approval has been granted. In addition, GM’s board held an emergency meeting last Friday to review the proposal and is considering forming an internal committee to evaluate its potential impact. Despite these developments, GM has not yet officially joined the Nissan-Renault alliance. This potential partnership could bring together some of the world's most established automakers, creating a powerful coalition that could challenge other major players in the industry. Analysts are closely watching the situation, as the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the future of automotive collaboration.
