Nissan Motor has announced that it is in early-stage discussions with General Motors (GM) to explore a potential partnership that could reshape the automotive industry landscape. The proposal aims to integrate GM into the existing alliance between Nissan and Renault, creating a stronger global automotive entity. This move comes as both companies seek to enhance their competitive edge amid evolving market dynamics.
The idea was first revealed by Kirk Kerkorian, the largest individual shareholder of GM, on June 30. In response, Nissan released a statement indicating that if GM's shareholders support the proposal, its board will approve initial negotiations to form a strategic alliance. The company has also authorized its CEO, along with Renault’s CEO Carlos Ghosn, to engage in talks with GM.
Ghosn recently secured the backing of Kerkorian, who holds a 9.9% stake in GM. Kerkorian has been advocating for GM to consider the proposal. However, both Nissan and Renault have emphasized that any deal would require unanimous approval from GM’s board, which has not yet occurred. As a result, the proposed alliance remains in the preliminary stages.
According to reports, GM’s board met last Friday for an emergency session to evaluate the proposal and is considering forming an internal committee to assess its viability. Despite these efforts, GM has not officially joined the Nissan-Renault alliance so far.
This development highlights the growing interest in cross-border collaborations among major automakers as they navigate the challenges of electrification, digital transformation, and shifting consumer preferences. Analysts are closely watching how this potential partnership might evolve and what it could mean for the future of the global auto industry.
