Troubleshooting of Dongfeng Heavy Duty Truck Power Steering Pump

With the continuous advancement of science and technology, power steering systems have become increasingly widespread across various vehicle models. Not only do they enhance driver comfort and reduce physical effort during driving, but they also significantly improve the safety of vehicle operation. Currently, most light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks produced by Dongfeng Motor Company are equipped with power steering systems. Among these, the majority use vane pumps due to their stable performance and consistent flow rate. Although different models may employ different types of vane pumps, their operational principles and common failure symptoms are largely similar. To help users better understand and maintain the power steering system, this article takes the double-acting YB vane pump used in the Dongfeng Heavy Duty Truck EQ1141G model as an example, analyzing potential faults and providing practical troubleshooting solutions. 1. Double-acting structure and technical parameters of the YB-type vane pump 1.1 Structural characteristics: The double-acting YB vane pump is known for its compact design, high-pressure capability, smooth operation, low noise, and wide application range. 1.2 Technical specifications: For the EQ1141G series of Dongfeng heavy trucks, the YB vane pump has a maximum pressure of 14MPa, a displacement of 16mL/r, a maximum speed of 3200r/min, and a control flow of 20L/min. 2. Maintenance considerations when using the steering vane pump (1) In summer, it's recommended to use engine oil of model 15W/40 that matches the diesel engine. In winter, use No. 8 power steering fluid, and avoid mixing different oil types. (2) When refilling the oil, always filter it through the filter on the steering oil tank. Never add oil directly without filtration. (3) Ensure the oil level stays between the two marked lines on the dipstick. After filling, run the engine for 3–5 minutes and check the oil level again. Overfilling can cause oil spillage, while underfilling may lead to pump damage. (4) Keep the tubing between the tank and the vane pump straight. Bending the pipes can cause improper function of the vane pump or power steering system. (5) Do not over-tighten the joint caps on the tubing. Tighten them by hand first, then use a wrench for one-third of a turn. Over-tightening may damage the seals, leading to leaks. 3. Troubleshooting 3.1 First Fault: Unstable pump operation, resulting in heavy steering 3.1.1 Cause analysis: (1) Insufficient oil in the tank (2) Contaminated or degraded oil (3) Severe bending in the piping (4) Abnormal pump operation 3.1.2 Solutions: (1) Check and replace the oil to match the required specification, ensuring it’s within the two markings on the dipstick. (2) If the oil appears milky, thin, or dirty, replace it. Drain all old oil, refill with new oil, start the engine for 3–5 minutes, then drain again. Repeat 2–3 times until clean. (3) Inspect and correct any bent pipes. Replace damaged or irreparably bent tubes. (4) Remove the vane pump and inspect the blade and shaft for damage. Repair or replace as needed. 3.2 Second Fault: Vane pump does not work, steering is heavy 3.2.1 Cause analysis: (1) Damaged pump shaft (2) Blade wear or damage (3) Severe pipe kinking or damage (4) Inlet blockage (5) Incorrect oil type 3.2.2 Solutions: (1) Remove the pump and check the shaft for damage. Replace if necessary. (2) Inspect the blades for wear or damage and repair or replace accordingly. (3) Correct any kinked or damaged pipes. Replace severely damaged ones. (4) Clear any blockage at the pump inlet. (5) In cold weather, use No. 8 power steering fluid. Avoid mixing oils or using non-compliant types. 3.3 Third Fault: High pressure, heavy steering operation 3.3.1 Cause analysis: (1) Damaged blades in the vane pump (2) Weak or broken pressure regulator spring (3) Excessive return oil hole size 3.3.2 Solutions: (1) Check the blades for wear, adhesion, or damage. (2) Inspect the pressure regulator spring. If too soft, use a gasket or replace the spring. Replace any broken springs immediately. (3) If the return oil hole is too large, replace the pump back cover to resolve the issue. 4. Conclusion As power steering systems become more widely used in vehicles, mastering proper maintenance techniques for vane pumps is crucial for enhancing vehicle safety and extending the lifespan of the pump. Regular checks, correct oil usage, and timely repairs are essential for maintaining optimal performance.
