The history of screw pump development dates back to 1932 when the single-screw pump was invented by French engineer Moineau and later produced by the German company PCM Pump. In 1931, the three-screw pump was developed and manufactured by the Swedish company IMO. China began its own development in the early 1960s, with the Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory creating a high-pressure marine small-volume three-screw pump. This led to the establishment of a specialized factory for single, double, and triple screw pumps. Meanwhile, the Shenyang Pump Factory started developing and producing double and triple screw pumps in the mid-1960s, and by the 1970s, it successfully introduced a five-screw pump. In 1984, the Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory imported Allweiler's manufacturing technology and UK Holroyd’s 2AC screw milling machine along with supporting equipment, marking the beginning of mass production of screw pumps in China. This development lagged behind foreign countries by more than two decades.
Today, over 30 professional screw pump manufacturers operate in China, following more than a decade of growth since 1984. Key players include:
- **Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory**: Introduced Allweiler technology in 1984, along with a 2AC screw milling machine from Holroyd in the UK. In 1993, it adopted Bornemann technology from Germany and acquired a CNC screw whirlwind milling machine from Linsinger in Austria. It also introduced a 2AC-L and 5AC screw milling machine, and in 1998, a HNC35SL high-precision screw grinder from Klingelnberg. The factory produces approximately 6,000 units annually of single, double, and triple screw pumps.
- **Shishou Pump Factory**: Introduced Czechoslovakian technology and hollow-tube single-screw pump rotor equipment in 1989.
- **Xian Far East Machinery Manufacturing Company**: Produces around 600 single-screw pumps per year.
Other notable manufacturers include Hangzhou Pump Plant, Lanzhou Pump Factory, Zhejiang Dongyang Screw Pump Factory, Shanghai Light Industry Machinery Technology Research Institute, Jingjiang Chemical Machinery Factory, Wuxi Liangzhong Screw Pump Factory, Beijing Petroleum Machinery Factory, Jiaxing Oil Machinery Factory, Zhongcheng Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and others.
For twin-screw pumps, Jiangsu Huaiyin General Machinery Factory and Guangzhou Shipyard Machinery Factory are key producers, with annual outputs generally in the hundreds. Three-screw pump manufacturers include Nanjing Industrial Pump Factory and Shanghai Hydraulic Machinery Factory, though their production volumes are relatively low. Five-screw pumps are produced only by one plant, which has since been transferred to a day-pump factory.
In terms of output, China produces about 10,000 screw pumps annually, with three-screw pumps being the largest segment, accounting for over half of total production. Single and twin-screw pumps follow, while five-screw pumps remain a minor part of the market.
Screw pump rotors are made from high-quality materials such as 38CrMoAl, 40Cr, 20Cr13, 16Mn, CrS5, often treated with nitriding (HRC 56–65). Some use stainless steels like CrNi, CrMo, or CrNiMo, as well as MnCrS steel. Most manufacturers follow a standard process: rough milling → nitriding. However, the Tianjin Industrial Pump Factory uses a more advanced method: rough milling → nitriding → rough grinding.
Despite the growth, many factories still lack advanced equipment and require the establishment of fully equipped, technologically advanced screw pump production facilities to meet industry demands.
