Google’s penetration of traditional cars is another step forward. The company opened its first Android Auto API today, which means third-party Android developers have been able to build apps for car scenes.
Android Auto currently only supports two types of third-party apps: audio and messaging. Audio involves music, podcasts, news, and more. The content involved in Messaging includes notifications and information.
Google emphasizes the value of opening the Android Auto API:
For users, after connecting Android devices to compatible cars, they can enjoy the car-optimized Android experience with the help of car HUD (head-up display), steering wheel buttons and more.
For developers, they can provide drivers with a simple way to get messaging and listen to audio. At the same time, the Android Auto API helps developers "exhaustly" extend existing Android 5.0 apps to cars.
It's worth noting that developers don't have to care about the differences between different car models because Android Auto provides a unified API and a UX standard.
