Improper use of US$1.1 billion in annual losses The Ministry of Agriculture will strengthen pesticide residue monitoring

On September 15, during the second International Symposium on "Pesticide and Environmental Safety," it was revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture is set to intensify its efforts in managing pesticide environmental safety. The focus will be on addressing the misuse of pesticides, which can lead to excessive residue levels in agricultural products, posing serious risks to both human health and international trade. Wang Yunhao, Director of the Institute of Pesticide Verification under the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted in his report titled "Pesticide Management and Environmental Safety" that as scientific research advances and technology improves, the harmful effects of pesticides are becoming more widely recognized. Overuse and abuse of these chemicals not only result in dangerous pesticide residues in food but also threaten public health and China's agricultural exports. In recent years, numerous trade disputes have arisen due to high levels of pesticide residues in agricultural products. According to Wang, this issue costs China approximately $1.1 billion annually. He emphasized that improving pesticide management is crucial for safeguarding public and animal health, preserving the environment, ensuring sustainable agricultural production, and maintaining the competitiveness of China's agricultural and pesticide exports. To tackle this, the Ministry plans to implement a three-step strategy for monitoring pesticide residues in agricultural products. First, they aim to accelerate the development of testing methods and establish stricter residue limits. Second, they will enhance technical support and training to improve the overall quality of pesticide monitoring across the country. Third, they will closely monitor pesticide residues in key areas such as pollution-free farming zones, export bases, and major cities, regularly publishing test results to the public to increase transparency and trust. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of the long-term consequences of pesticide misuse and a commitment to protecting both the environment and public health through stronger regulatory measures.
