Improper use of US$1.1 billion in annual losses The Ministry of Agriculture will strengthen pesticide residue monitoring

On September 15, a reporter learned at the Second International Symposium on "Pesticide and Environmental Safety" that the Ministry of Agriculture is set to intensify its efforts in managing pesticide environmental safety. The focus will be on addressing the misuse of pesticides, which can lead to excessive residues in agricultural products, posing serious risks to both public health and trade. Wang Yunhao, Director of the Institute of Pesticide Verification under the Ministry of Agriculture, delivered a speech titled "Pesticide Management and Environmental Safety." He highlighted that as scientific research advances and technology improves, the negative impacts of pesticides are becoming more widely recognized. Overuse and abuse of these chemicals not only result in harmful residues in food but also endanger human health, leading to poisoning and even fatalities. Moreover, excessive pesticide residues have become a major barrier for China’s agricultural exports, causing frequent trade disputes. In recent years, China has suffered annual losses of up to $1.1 billion due to pesticide overuse. Wang emphasized that improving pesticide management is essential for safeguarding public and animal health, protecting the environment, ensuring sustainable agricultural development, and maintaining the competitiveness of China's agricultural and pesticide exports in global markets. To tackle this issue, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to implement a three-step strategy for monitoring pesticide residues. First, it will accelerate the development of testing methods and residue limit standards. Second, it will provide more technical guidance and training to enhance the overall capability of pesticide residue monitoring across the country. Third, it will strengthen tracking and monitoring in pollution-free agricultural zones, export bases, and major cities, regularly releasing inspection results to the public to increase transparency and awareness. This comprehensive approach aims to build a safer and more sustainable agricultural system while restoring international confidence in Chinese agricultural products.
